Espera, led by Rodrigo Martins, crafts wines in Alcobaça, north of Lisbon, using organic, heritage-driven methods that connect each vintage to the region's natural rhythms. Espera translates as 'wait' in English, a principle that forms the basis of Espera's winemaking philosophy. Spending 12 months in used French oak gives this wine a richness and depth that shows the versatility of the Castelão grape. It is vibrant with red berry notes, with subtle earthy undertones and a touch of spice. The wine is fresh and smooth, with balanced acidity and mild tannins. It pairs beautifully with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or Portuguese classics like charcuterie and seafood stews.
ABOUT THE MAKER
Espera is the vision of Rodrigo Martins, who draws inspiration from the concept of "waiting" to connect his organically farmed vineyards in the Alcobaça region, just north of Lisbon, to the rhythms of nature. With 5 hectares dedicated to indigenous grape varieties, including the renowned Touriga Nacional, Rodrigo crafts each cuvée with a unique approach, allowing the wine to evolve based on its vintage. By embracing the historical winemaking practices of the area's Cistercian monks, Espera offers a true reflection of Alcobaça's terroir and rich heritage.
